The Seneca Falls Convention

1848 · the first women's rights convention in the United States

Around three hundred people met over two days in a chapel in a small New York town to discuss the condition of women. Elizabeth Cady Stanton read a Declaration of Sentiments modelled on the Declaration of Independence, adding two words: "and women".

Of its eleven resolutions, only the demand for the vote was contested, and it passed after Frederick Douglass spoke for it. Sixty-eight women and thirty-two men signed. Only one of them lived to vote in a federal election.
