Louis Pasteur

Chemist who proved that germs cause disease

Pasteur showed that fermentation and disease are caused by micro-organisms, not spontaneous generation. He developed vaccines for anthrax and rabies and gave his name to the heat treatment that made milk safe to drink.

He refused burial at the Panthéon; instead he lies in a Byzantine mosaic crypt beneath the institute he founded, which still carries out research a few metres above him.
