Käthe Kollwitz

Artist of grief and the poor

Kollwitz drew and carved weavers, workers and above all mourning mothers. Her younger son Peter was killed in Flanders in 1914, eighteen years old; she spent the next eighteen years making the memorial "The Grieving Parents" for his war cemetery.

The Nazis forced her out of the Prussian Academy and forbade her to exhibit. She died two weeks before the war in Europe ended. An enlargement of her sculpture "Mother with her Dead Son" now stands in the Neue Wache in Berlin.
