Muralist
Rivera returned from Europe in 1921 convinced that art belonged on public walls rather than in private houses. Over the next thirty years he covered ministries, schools and palaces with the history of Mexico, from the Aztec markets to the revolution.
A mural he painted in New York was destroyed for including Lenin; he repainted it in Mexico City. He asked to be buried beside Frida Kahlo, but the state placed him in the rotunda of illustrious persons.
