The Launch of Apollo 11

1969 · three men left for the Moon from this pad

At 9.32 in the morning a Saturn V rose from pad 39A carrying Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. About a million people watched from the beaches and roads around Cape Canaveral.

Four days later Armstrong and Aldrin landed with roughly twenty-five seconds of fuel remaining, while Collins orbited alone overhead. The guidance computer had less memory than a modern doorbell. President Nixon had a speech ready in case they could not be brought home.
