Amália Rodrigues

The voice of fado

Amália sold fruit on the Lisbon docks as a girl and was singing in a fado house at nineteen. Over fifty years she took a music of back rooms and taverns onto the stages of Paris, New York and Tokyo, and made "saudade" a word the rest of the world had heard.

When she died the government declared three days of national mourning and the election campaign then under way was suspended. In 2001 she became the first woman moved to the National Pantheon.
